Top 350 Asian Universities’ List of 2018 Includes 10 Pakistani Universities
It is true that there are some major flaws in Pakistan’s education system, waiting to be corrected. We have incredibly successful businessmen like Aqeel Karim Dedhi
in the country but sadly, no influential leaders in the education sector. But now things are changing gradually and efforts are being made to improve the education system as well. Recently, ten universities have been added to the list of top 350 Asian universities. The list has been released by THE (Times Higher Education) in order to evaluate the status of Asian universities. Last year, the list included 300 universities but this year, 50 more universities have been added to the list making the total of 350 universities.
Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad is leading the way by being on the 79th
position in the list. It is also a remarkable improvement from the university on the individual basis as it was ranked in the 121-130 band last year. COMSAT has also improved from last year and is now on the 125th
position. The improvement has occurred due to the revised standards of research and teaching standards.
Besides the evaluation, three new universities from Pakistan has made it to the list. Namely, University of Peshawar, PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi and the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore are the new entries in the list.
Following are the positions of other Pakistani universities in the list.
- National University of Sciences and Technology (162)
- University of Agriculture
- Faisalabad (251-300)
- Bahauddin Zakariya University (301-350)
- University of Lahore (301-350)
- University of Peshawar (301-350)
- PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (301-350)
- The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore (301-350)
- Government College University Lahore (351-plus).
Remarks of Editorial Director
The Editorial Director of THE, Phil Baty appreciated the progress of Pakistani universities in the following words.
“It is a fantastic achievement that Pakistan now has 10 universities in the Asia rankings and that its two leading universities have risen up the table,”
Why Are Some Of The Finest Universities of Pakistan Missing From The List?
Despite the appreciable improvement, the fact that some of the finest universities of Pakistan like LUMS and NUML have not made it to the list is disturbing. Terrorism or safety issue cannot be the reason as security agencies
are now taking care of that.
Baty explained that the reason of these universities not qualifying to be in the list is the low number of research papers submitted. Moreover, some of these universities didn’t participate in the first place. He said,
“Country’s poor research environment, not helped by a lack of funding, is preventing the nation from fulfilling its higher education potential. Research must be made a priority if a country wants to stand out from its competition on the world’s largest continent.”
He explained further
“LUMS and GIKI both participated in THE rankings’ data collection process but are not ranked as they do not yet meet the publication threshold, neither Aga Khan University nor NUML participated in the process. We require that universities who wish to participate in THE World University Rankings teach undergraduates and publish sufficient research — at least 1,000 papers in the preceding five years and no fewer than 150 per year.”
